Hyperdrive, Warp Speed, or simply FTL Travel

Could it really exist? We think so, yes. We know from Einstein that space is like a fabric (called space-time) and that the fabric can be bent or twisted. If we had a technology that would compress space-time at the front of our spaceship and at the same time expand it at the rear of our spaceship then we would have a hyperdrive system. Sounds easy eh? The only way of compressing the fabric of space is to use a large amount of mass (like a star or a black hole). A definite challenge, and one beyond us for the foreseeable future. However, that doesn't mean it's impossible.

The other alternative is to build stable wormhole using two very large masses at each end, to create a tunnel through space-time. Alternatively grow a wormhole from scratch. Again in theory it sounds easy enough, but the technology for this would be another "challenge" as well.

If you're interested in finding out more, I recommend the following books:

SLIP-STRING DRIVE (BOOK)

SlipString Drive takes you through the basics of string and M-theories so that you can embark on a "faster than light" voyage without violating physics. By using gravity waves to completely isolate volumes of spacetime from the rest of the univers. Bender also offers a "Membrane Theory of Gravity." A modification of M-theory, this new theory unifies all forces, and predicts dark matter and energy.

HYPERDRIVE (BOOK)

Hyperdrive is a name given to certain methods of traveling faster-than-light (FTL) in science fiction. Related concepts are jump drive and warp drive.

PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE: A SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION OF PHASERS, FORCE FIELDS, TELEPORTATION AND TIME TRAVEL (BOOK)

Physics of the Impossible takes us on a journey to the frontiers of science and beyond. Everyday we see that what was once declared ‘impossible’ by scientists has become part of our everyday lives. Bestselling author Micho Kaku confidently hurdles today’s frontier of science, presenting the first truly authoritative exploration of the real science of tomorrow covering perpetual motion, force fields, invisibility, ray guns, anti-gravity and anti-matter, teleportation, telepathy, psychokinesis, robots and cyborgs, faster than light travel, time travel, zero-point energy, extraterrestrial life, even clairvoyance.

FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT (BOOK)

This is the story of the most radical idea to have been proposed in the field of physics since Einstein's relativity theory - the suggestion that the speed of light may not be constant. Written by Imperial College lecturer Joao Magueijo, the book also introduces the reader to modern cosmology.

PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE: A SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION OF THE WORLD OF PHASERS, FORCE FIELDS, TELEPORTATION AND TIME TRAVEL (KINDLE)

Michio Kaku takes us through an excellent description of Sci-Fi science. This comes highly recommended.
